If there is a green pass label on the appliance then this indicates that portable appliance testing has previously been carried out at the premises. The next step is to determine when the machine testing was performed. The labels, if completed correctly, should clearly state the appliance identification number, the date when the appliance was tested, and the recommended date of the next test. This information should also be backed up by a health and safety file containing the appliance testing records of all appliances that have been tested at the premises. If no labels or records can be located then it is clear that electrical appliance testing should be carried out as quickly as possible. In order to be authorised to carry out the PAT testing it is necessary to possess the appropriate qualifications. To achieve the basic qualification required to trade as a proper electrical tester you need to attend a training course and sit an examination.

In order to attend the course it is essential that you have previous electrical knowledge and experience so that you can understand the technical terms used during the training session. Most appliance testing engineers have previously worked as an electrician or an electrical engineer and have branched into this form of testing. The reason why many electricians diversify into electrical testing is the fact that testing has to be carried out on a yearly basis so if you receive a number of new clients in year one you are more than likely to receive repeat custom in year two. Due to the sheer volume of appliances which require testing there is always plenty of work in this industry.
